Project: Reading with Parents at the Nursery
At the ESLJ Nursery, we believe that language is more than just words — it is identity, family, and connection.
This month, our nursery completed a very special project called Reading with Parents. We invited parents from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds to join us in the classroom and share a story in their mother tongue.
Our children had the opportunity to listen to stories in Chinese, Bulgarian, Russian, Slovene, English, Turkish, Czech, and other languages. For many of them, it was the first time hearing some of these languages spoken up close. The room was filled with curiosity, attentive listening, and thoughtful questions.
This project was about much more than reading. It helped the children develop openness towards differences, empathy for others, and a deeper understanding of their friends’ lives at home. They began to see that every family has its own language, traditions, and stories — and that these differences are something to celebrate.
Experiences like this nurture communication, collaboration, and mutual respect. Most importantly, they remind us that diversity is one of our greatest strengths. 🌍
