S1E and hands-on learning

A force of nature? Naturally! During S1E's integrated sciences lesson, Mrs. Charlesworth took the students outdoors to experiment with basic forces. To see the relationships between speed, distance, and time, students were encouraged to run, speed walk, walk quickly backwards, and act like a zombie. They practiced their skills of measuring time to two decimal places using stopwatches and measuring distance with a trundle wheel. Students also reinforced their learning of Newton's First Law of Motion (the Law of Inertia) on the see-saw. They demonstrated that greater weight (mass x gravitation field strength) on one side of the see-saw leads to unbalanced forces and a change in motion, causing the see-saw to accelerate downward on the heavier side until balance is restored.
