Host Family Experience

We are a family of 3 from Ljubljana who, as part of an Erasmus exchange, decided to host one of the children who were selected to visit Ljubljana together with their teachers and other children. We were waiting impatiently for Sunday, 17 March, when 11-year-old Thiago from Elba came to stay with us for a week.

Three weeks earlier, we had contacted him by video, seen him and his parents in person for the first time, exchanged a few words and said goodbye. And shortly after that, that Sunday arrived, when a bus full of children pulled into the school car park at around 7pm. The very first moment our guest stepped off the bus was special. He and our Lucas hugged each other and it was clear that we were in for a wonderful week full of new adventures. Thiago was a very warm and friendly boy from day one, with good habits and good manners. The only thing that might have worried us a little before his arrival was the language, as two of our family don't speak Italian and the third (in this case Lucas' father) left on a business trip shortly after Thiago's arrival for almost the whole visit. Well, even that fear disappeared pretty quickly, because we tried to be reciprocal and Thiago understood a little English. The week with Thiago was a wonderful experience for both Lucas and us, his parents. The mornings were spent at school and the afternoons were spent with the family and it really made each day special and unique.

The week flew by, we all needed a little rest after Thiago left, but even now that Thiago is no longer with us, we still have some really good memories of a really special visit from Tuscany. As a family, after this nice experience, we decided to visit Thiago and his family in Elba at some point in the near future. And if we ever had the chance to host someone again, we would not hesitate to do it again.
